Later, in the year 2013, King Mohammed VI appointed him as interim Minister of Finance after Istiqlal ministers resigned from Benkirane’s Cabinet. He kept the position until 9 October 2013. Also in 2013, head of government Abdelilah Benkirane appointed him as Acting minister of Economy and Finance to replace Nazir Baraka.

Later, in the year 2016, he rejoined the RNI and won the presidency of the party.

Akhannouch was born in 1961 in Tafraout to one of the wealthiest family in Morocco. Furthermore, Aziz graduated from Universite de Sherbrooke with a management diploma in the year 1986.
