He has two brothers, Will and Patrick and four sisters, Terry, Jan, Jeanie, and Kim. He went to Walsingham Academy and Poe Middle School at his elementary years. When he was at age of 11, he moved to 5900 blocks of Castleton Drive in San Diego, California where he attended Hale Junior High School.

His family moved to Virginia when he was in the first year at James Madison High School and he attended Annandale High School. When he was in junior year, his father was stationed in Japan where he attended and was a member of the Drama Club at Nile C. Kinnick High School, from where he was graduated in 1969. Then later he studied at Los Angeles City College taking drama as a major subject.

Mark Hamill was married to dental hygienist Marilou York in a private civil ceremony on December 17, 1978.
