Playing as a forward, Ian Wright had a successful career with London clubs Crystal Palace and Arsenal. In the beginning, he started playing senior football at Greenwich Borough in 1985.

After that, he moved to Crystal Palace (1985–1991), where he played in 225 games and scored 90 goals. Then, he joined Arsenal (1991–1998), making 221 appearances and scoring 128 goals. During his time with Arsenal, he achieved success by winning the Premier League title, both major domestic cup competitions, and the Cup Winners' Cup. Following his stint at Arsenal, Wright played for West Ham United (1998–1999), making 22 appearances and scoring 9 goals. He also had a brief loan spell at Nottingham Forest in 1999, playing 10 matches and scoring 5 goals. Moving to the Scottish Premier League, he played for Celtic (1999–2000), making 8 appearances and scoring 3 goals. Wrapping up his club career, he played for Burnley in 2000, featuring in 15 games and scoring 4 goals.
