At the age of 12, Standen began his journey into stunts, horse riding, and sword fighting while working in a professional stunt team in Nottingham. By 15, he was part of the National Youth Theatre and the National Youth Music Theatre, performing at various renowned venues. Standen later secured a spot in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art's three-year acting course.

His career took off in 2004 with roles in "Waking the Dead," the Second World War documentary "Ten Days to D-Day," and as Major Alan Marshall in "Zero Hour," a TV drama depicting a Special Air Service mission in Sierra Leone. He continued with appearances in "Doctors," "Tom Brown's Schooldays," "Doctor Who," and as Archer in BBC One's "Robin Hood." Standen also starred as Sir Gawain in Starz's "Camelot" series.
