In 2011, his party won a plurality of seats in the parliamentary election. After that, his party, Justice and Development Party(PJD), formed a coalition with three parties that had been part of previous governments. Likewise, in the elections held in October 2016, PJD increased its share of the vote under Abdelilah's leadership. Later, On March 15, 2017, King Mohammed VI ousted Benkirane as Prime Minister of Morocco and asked his party to choose another leader. Finally, on March 17, 2017, the King appointed PJD's second-in-command Saadeddine Othmani as the new prime minister of Morocco. Later, on March 23, 2017, Abdelilah told reporters that he was looking forward to forming a new coalition government and provide his service to the country as "the caretaker of the government and Secretary General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD).” Consequently, the appointment of the new dovious prime minister is expected to end the five months of post-election deadlock over cabinet formation. To make matter worse, Morocco's election law has been set such a way that no party can win a complete majority.

A chess and decent music lover, Benkirane was a leftist political activist during the 1970's. Since 1997, he has been representing, Salé, a city in northwest Morocco, in the Moroccan parliament. And since 2008, he is leading the Justice and Development Party after winning and replacing former leaderSaadeddine Othmani. Benkirane follows a political ideology that is a mix of democratic and Islamist ideologies. According to him, secularism is “a dangerous concept for Morocco." However, he is against threatening civil liberties in the country.

Personal Life

Abdelilah Benkirane was born in 1954 in Rabat, Morocco. His family originally came from Fes to Morocco. Furthermore, Benkirane father followed Sufism and Islamic fundamentalism. Similarly, his mother attended meetings of woman branch of Istiqlal, a conservative and monarchist party in Morocco. In an interview, Abdelilah has referred his father as his role model. His father died at the age of 60 when Abdelilah was just 16. Last but not the least, he is happily married to a political activist and has six children. Sadly, his youngest daughter is suffering from tetraplegia. It  is "paralysis caused by illness or injury that results in the partial or total loss of use of all four limbs and torso."
