Barboza was competitive since 2009 who dominated Renaissance MMA and Ring of Combat leagues before making his way into the UFC. Barboza was given to make his UFC debut against Daren Elkins on November 20, 2010, at UFC 123 but due to the injury of Elkins, he was replaced by newcomer Mike Lullo. Barboza defeated Lullo in the third round by RKO due to leg kicks.On March 19, 2011, at UFC 128, Barboza won against Anthony Njokuani by unanimous decision but both fighters were honored by “Fight of the Night”. Then Barboza defeated Ross Pearson at UFC 134 via split decision and both fighters earned “Fight of the Night” bonus honors.

Then on January 14, 2012, at UFC 142, Barboza faced Terry Etim and defeated him by KO in the third round, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to finish an opponent via wheel kick. From this match, he earned his first “Knockout of the Night” bonus award and several media outlets ranked it as the top knockout of 2012. Then on May 26, 2012, at UFC 146, he was expected to face Evan Dunham but dropped out of the bout due to injury and was replaced by returning veteran Jamie Varner. On January 19, 2013, at UFC on FX 7, Barboza was expected to face Justin Salas but due to his injury, he was replaced by promotional newcomer Lucas Martin in which Barboza defeated him via TKO. A very interesting lightweight matchup between two top-ranked 155-pound contenders Edson Barboza and Khabib Nurmagomedov has been booked for the UFC’s year-end show which Dec 30 at UFC 219 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Barboza accepted the challenge but Nurmagomedov was holding out hope to get a shot against UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson which would, in turn, free up UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor to fight Nate Diaz in a trilogy match. Nermagonedov would be willing to fight Barboza if the plan turned out to be McGregor VS Ferguson.
