The Career of Kevin McHale-

In the 1980 NBA draft, the Celtics traded their top overall pick for Robert Parish and a third overall pick, which they used to draft Kevin McHale. McHale initially faced contract issues but eventually signed with the Celtics, making an immediate impact and earning a spot on the NBA's All-Rookie First Team. Boston finished the season with a league-leading record of 62–20 and went on to win the NBA championship. Over the next few seasons, the Celtics faced challenges and changes, including coaching adjustments and McHale's temporary contract dispute. Despite these obstacles, McHale continued to be a key player for the Celtics. In the 1983–84 season, he won the NBA Sixth Man Award, and Boston reached the NBA Finals, defeating the Lakers to secure their 15th championship.

The following season, McHale transitioned to a starting role and played a crucial part in the Celtics' success. In the 1985–86 season, Boston dominated the league with a 67–15 record, setting NBA records for home victories. They won their 16th championship by defeating the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals.

McHale's individual performance reached its peak during the 1986–87 season, where he achieved career highs in scoring and rebounding. He became the first player in NBA history to shoot over 60% from the field and over 80% from the free-throw line in the same season. Despite facing injuries, McHale played a significant role in the playoffs, helping the Celtics reach the NBA Finals but falling to the Lakers in six games.

In the later years of McHale's career, injuries and team dynamics affected the Celtics' performance. The team faced challenges, including the retirement of head coach K.C. Jones. Injuries limited Larry Bird's playing time, and the Celtics struggled in the playoffs, unable to advance past the conference semi-finals. McHale's last season in the NBA, 1992–93, was marked by injuries, and he announced his retirement after a playoff loss to the Charlotte Hornets. His legacy includes being part of the Celtics' "Big Three" alongside Larry Bird and Robert Parish. McHale was known for his offensive prowess, defensive skills, and numerous accolades, including being named to multiple All-NBA teams. His contributions to the Celtics earned him the retirement of his jersey number 32, and he was later honored as one of the NBA's 50 greatest players. In 2021, he was named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team and, in 2022, was inaugurated into the Croatian-American Sports Hall of Fame.
