In 1999, Li Na turned professional at the age of sixteen and won three out of her four ITF Circuit singles tournaments. She also won all seven ITF doubles tournaments. In 2000, she won 52 singles matches on the ITF circuit, the highest by any player. 

In 2004, Li Na defeating Martina Sucha in the finals so, she became the first Chinese player to win a WTA event. With such an impressive performance, she broke up into the WTA top 100 for the first time on October 4, 2004.

Li Na won her second WTA singles title, where she competed at the 2008 Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts in Gold Coast, Australia. In the 2008 Porsche Grand Prix tournament, she defeated Serena Williams and became only the second Chinese after Zheng Jie, to defeat a world No. 1 player.

Li Na reached her fifth career tour final, at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships and lost to second-seeded Marion Bartoli in the final in straight sets. Her ranking was world No. 15, by the end of 2009.

At the 2010 Australian Open, Li Na defeated fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams before losing to Serena Williams in the semi-final. This performance made her the first Chinese woman ever to be ranked in the top 10 of women's professional tennis. 

At the 2010 Aegon Classic, Li Na was seeded first and went on to defeat 4th seed Aravane Rezai in the semi-final and 2nd seeded Maria Sharapova in the final to win the tournament. At Australian Open, she reached the finals but lost to Kim Clijsters in the final.

On June 4, 2011, Li Na won her first Grand Slam singles event at the French Open when she defeated Francesca Schiavone in the final, a match that was watched by 330 million viewers worldwide. Her career ranking rose to world No. 4.

Due to a knee injury, Li Na announced her retirement from the professional tennis on 19 September 2014. She was ranked world no. 6 at the time by Women's Tennis Association.

In 1997, Li Na attended China's National Tennis Team. A year later she went to John Newcombe Academy in Texas to study tennis for 10 months, on a sponsorship from Nike and returned to China.
