Settling in the new country, he enrolled in the Australian Institute of Sport, which opened doors for him to join the Queensland team for age group cricket. Initially known more for his batting skills than his all-round abilities, Marnus represented the Queensland side at various levels, including U15, U17, and U19.

His talent and dedication earned him a contract with the senior team, leading to his First Class debut during the 2014/15 season of the Sheffield Shield, Australia's esteemed domestic multi-day competition. He created history by becoming the first-ever concussion substitute in Test cricket during the second Ashes Test of the 2019 series at Lord's.
