He made his junior Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon in 2013 and reached his career-high junior ranking of world No. 13 in 2014. In his early professional career, Medvedev made his ATP main draw debut in doubles in 2015 and singles in 2016. He had some notable wins and reached his first ATP final in January 2017, jumping to world No. 65 in the rankings. Throughout 2017, he continued to make strides, reaching multiple quarterfinals and making his mark in Grand Slam events.

The year 2018 was a breakthrough for Medvedev, winning his first ATP titles, including the Sydney International and the Winston-Salem Open. He continued his success into 2019, winning two Masters titles and reaching the US Open final, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. In 2020, Medvedev had a standout performance at the ATP Finals, defeating top-ranked players including Nadal and Novak Djokovic to claim the championship. In 2021, he won the US Open, defeating Djokovic in the final.

In 2022, Medvedev became world No. 1 for the first time in his career after a successful run at the Mexican Open and other tournaments.
