Alex started playing tennis at the age of seven and also played Australian rules football and basketball during his youth. Alex Bolt turned professional in the year 2011. His highest tennis rankings were 125th in singles (achieved on March 4, 2019) and 81st in doubles (achieved on January 15, 2018). As of October 30, 2023, he was ranked 310th in singles and 166th in doubles. In singles, Bolt's best Grand Slam result was reaching the third round of the Australian Open in 2019. In doubles, he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2014 and 2017.

In the year 2016, he took a break from tennis to play local football and worked as a fence-builder. His tennis career began in Murray Bridge, competing in the Murray Bridge Lawn Tennis Association.
