Debra Messing was selected as one of the fifteen students to get an acceptance from New York University’ Tisch School of the Arts’ acting program. Messing followed this with landing the role of Harper in the pre-Broadway workshop production of Tony Kushner’s iconic Angels in America: Perestroika, for which she received critical acclaim. Following her performance in the acclaimed play, Debra was cast in NYPP Blue as a recurring star between 1994 and 1995. This was followed by her film debut in Alfonso Arau’s A Walk in the Clouds.

Debra Messing was eventually cast in Fox network’s Ned & Stacy and appeared as the eponymous Stacy for two seasons of the show. Messing was starring in ABC’s prey when her agent sent her the script for Will & Grace. Impressed by the show’s unique premise, Messing gave up on her plans to take a break from acting.
