Michelle Wingshan Kwan was born on July 7, 1980, in Torrance, California, to the parents, Danny and Estella Kwan. She also has two older siblings.

She began her interest in figure skating when she was five. Her siblings, Ron was an ice hockey player and Karen was also a figure skater which made her follow them onto the ice.

Concerning her primary education, Michelle went to Soleado Elementary School but left the school and she was homeschooled. Then, she went to Rim of the World High School.

She also attended UCLA for one year but later transferred to the University of Denver. She graduated with a degree in international studies and a minor in political science from Denver's Josef Korbel School of International Studies in 2009.
