While living in Staten Island, New York, he wrestled in high school. Ricco later went to California and started trained in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Rigan Machado and Jean Jacques Machado. He won many tournaments and earned the gold medal at the ADCC Submission World Championship as well as won several Jiu Jitsu tournaments before moving on to MMA.

Ricco Rodriguez started his mixed martial arts career in 1999 when he fought at the Superbrawl 13 event held in Hawaii. Later, he also appears on The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Mark Kerr and the DVD documentary was produced by his trainers Mark Kerr and Bas Rutten.

Ricco Rodriguez also travels to Japan, trained at the Takada Dojo and fought in PRIDE and KOTC sessions. He was successful in winning against professionals John Marsh, Takayuki Okada and Gary Goodridge and but felt these earnings were not enough.
