Derrick Lewis started his career as a boxer at the age of seventeen but later focused on mixed martial arts. Then in late 2009, he started his journey in MMA and made his debut as an amateur at LSAMMA on October 16, 2009. Then later, he fought with Tim Buchanan at the United States American Combat Association event in 2010. After signing the contract with Bellator Fighting Championship in May 2010, he scheduled a fight against Thiago Santos at Bellator 45 but the match was canceled and in next he faced Tony Johnson at Bellator 46 on June 25, 2011.

Derrick Lewis was signed to the UFC after leaving Bellator and his debut against Nandor Guelmino was scheduled at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann in 2013. As the match was canceled he made his debut at UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne on April  19, 2014. After that, he fought many fights including The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale, UFC Fight Night 50, UFC 184, UFC Fight Night 68, UFC 192, UFC Fight Night 82, UFC Fight Night 86, UFC Fight Night 110 and many more. Derrick Lewis was born on February 8, 1985, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the second oldest child of his seven siblings and he was raised by his single mother. He was troubled in growing up and often used to involve in street fighting. In 1999, he and his family moved to Houston, Texas. When he was at the age of 17, he began training in boxing and was preparing for his first amateur fight when the gym unexpectedly shut down.

Derrick Lewis married his long-time girlfriend April Davis in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 17, 2017. They are blessed with three children, two boys who are for and five years old and a 13-year-old daughter.
