In 1949, he made his first appearance in Hollywood film, "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" alongside with Barbara Stanwyck after serving in U.S. Navy during World War II. He has worked with many leading directors, including Billy Wilder for 1951's film "Ace in the Hole". He has appeared in Vincente Minnelli's movie "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952), and also in troubled artist Vincent van Gogh's movie "Lust for Life" (1956). He has earned an Academy Award nomination for each of those films.

He has also appeared with his friend and fellow Hollywood heavyweight, Burt Lancaster in movies like "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" (1957), "The Devil's Disciple" (1959) and "Seven Days in May" (1964). He has also appeared in Stanley Kubrick's movie "Paths of Glory" (1957) which is the World War I drama movie and "Spartacus" (1960).  

In the 1970s, he tried his hand at directing, but he was not successful instead he met with little success. Two of his directorial efforts i.e. "Scalawag" (1973) and "Posse" (1975), failed and did not make much of an impression on movie-goers. But his more memorable films include "The Man from Snowy River" (1982) and "Tough Guys" (1986), which was his last on-screen reunion with Lancaster.

Kirk Douglas was born on December 9, 1916, in Amsterdam, New York as Issur Danielovitch. He is the son of Bryna "Bertha" and Herschel "Harry" Danielovitch. He grew up in a poor family.He legally changed his name to Kirk Doulas before entering the United States Navy during World War II.

He used work odd jobs to pay for his college education and to support himself while studying acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. At that time, he had no idea what would be his future.

Kirk Douglas has married twice. First, he got married to Diana Dill on November 2, 1943, and got divorced in 1951. The couple had two sons, Michael Douglas who is now an actor and Joel Douglas who is now a producer.

Later, he met Anne Buydens, a producer in Paris while acting on location in Lust for Life. They got married on May 29, 1954. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills in 2014. They had two sons, Peter who is a producer, and Eric who is an actor.

But, Eric Douglas died on July 6, 2004, from an accidental overdose of alcohol and prescription drugs.
