On January 6, 2012, Figueroa secured a surprising TKO victory against the undefeated Puerto Rican-American prospect Michael Pérez, a match broadcasted on Showtime. Throughout 2012, he achieved success in six bouts, including his inaugural appearance for Golden Boy Promotions, where he knocked out Mexico's Ramon Ayala in the second round. Expanding on this momentum in 2013, Figueroa claimed the vacant WBC interim lightweight title by winning a unanimous decision against Japan's Nihito Arakawa, a bout recognized by Showtime commentator Mauro Ranallo as a potential candidate for the 2013 Fight of the Year.

Scott Christ, a writer for the boxing blog Bad Left Hook, later expressed his astonishment at Figueroa and Arakawa's clash, stating, "This fight was unreal and has to be seen to be believed. The brutality was simply off the charts. They might not agree with it today, but I heard more than one person last night say that this was the best fight they've ever seen, or the best fight of the 2000s." In the year 2015, Figueroa secured a unanimous decision victory over former world titlist Ricky Burns at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.

On February 16, 2019, Figueroa faced John Molina Jr. in a challenging contest, showcasing superior skills to win via unanimous decision with scores of 99-91, 98-92, and 97-93.

In his subsequent bout against Yordenis Ugas, ranked #5 by the WBC at welterweight, Figueroa suffered a convincing defeat with scores of 119-107 across all three scorecards. Moving forward to face Abel Ramos, ranked #8 by the WBA at welterweight, Figueroa endured significant punishment in the first six rounds, leading his trainer Joel Diaz to halt the fight after the end of the sixth round.
