Light welterweight Marcos Maidana began his boxing career in 2004 at the age of 21. He secured victories in his first 18 fights in Argentina, claiming the WBA Fedelatin super lightweight title in his 18th bout. By the end of 2008, Maidana boasted an undefeated record of 25–0 with 24 stoppages. His journey to a world title began in 2009 when he challenged Andreas Kotelnik for the WBA super lightweight championship, losing in a controversial split decision.

Maidana's notable fights include facing Victor Ortiz in his U.S. debut, knocking out Victor Cayo to retain his interim WBA super lightweight title, and defeating DeMarcus Corley. His clash with Amir Khan in 2010, although ending in a loss, earned Fight of the Year honors. Maidana later moved up to welterweight, where he faced Devon Alexander and suffered a unanimous decision loss. However, he rebounded with victories over Jesus Soto Karass and Josesito Lopez.

A significant moment in Maidana's career was his encounter with Adrien Broner in the year 2013. Despite being an underdog, Maidana swarmed Broner, securing a unanimous decision victory. He exercised a rematch clause, and although Broner apologized for his behavior, Maidana triumphed again.

The pinnacle of Maidana's career came in 2014 when he faced the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a highly anticipated bout. Despite a valiant effort, Maidana lost via majority decision. A rematch followed, with Mayweather emerging victorious via unanimous decision. Maidana officially retired from professional boxing in August 2016 with a career record of 35 wins (31 by knockout) and 5 decision losses.
