The Career and Achievements of Kumar Sangakkara-

In July 2000, Sangakkara made his debut in ODI against Pakistan. He single-handedly carried the team in the second match of the Singer Triangular series in Galle, facing the formidable bowling attack of South Africa. His outstanding knock of 85 runs earned him his first Man of the Match award. During the same series against South Africa, he also made his debut in Test cricket. After narrowly missing out on centuries twice before by getting out in the 90s, he finally scored his maiden Test century in his tenth Test match. His journey to glory began when he transformed from a player who played a steady role for his team with limited shots to an attractive batsman with a wide array of cricketing shots in his repertoire. While he had always been a proficient back-foot player, excelling in cut and pull shots, Sangakkara worked on his batting style and became equally confident as a front-foot player. His cover drives were hailed as some of the best in the game, and he aspired to emulate the straight drives of Sachin Tendulkar.

In the year 2002, he achieved his first double-century against Pakistan in the final of the 2nd Asian Test Championship, helping Sri Lanka secure the Test championship. At that time, it would have been hard to believe that this young talent would come close to breaking Bradman's record of 12 double centuries, but Sangakkara defied the odds and fell just one short. Together with his teammate Mahela Jayawardene, Sangakkara formed the highest partnership for the 3rd wicket in Test history, accumulating 5890 runs and surpassing the previous record held by Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar (5826 runs).

His memorable innings of 192 runs against Australia in Hobart in 2007 further solidified his position as the linchpin of the Sri Lankan batting line-up. As a modern wicketkeeper-batsman, Sangakkara's versatility played a crucial role in his team's success. His exceptional performances led him to top the ICC test rankings in 2007, and he was selected for the ICC World ODI XI in 2005 and the World Test Team in 2006. In 2014, he unleashed a nightmare for Bangladesh in Chittagong, displaying his batting prowess. He effortlessly turned any delivery into a boundary and achieved his personal best of 319 runs in Test cricket. Furthermore, in the same year, he amassed a staggering 2868 runs across all formats of the game, making it the highest aggregate by any player in a calendar year. Talking about his individual stats, a detailed list is shown below-

CAPTAINCY-

In the year 2009, Sangakkara was given the role of Sri Lanka's captain in all formats of the game, succeeding Mahela Jayawardene, with the valuable experience of 80 Tests and 246 ODIs under his belt.

Under his leadership, Sangakkara's abilities soared to new heights. He achieved notable success, steering Sri Lanka to victory in the tri-series held in Bangladesh and triumphing over their Asian rivals, India.

One of his most significant accomplishments was leading the team to the final of the 2011 World Cup. Despite the heart-wrenching loss in the ultimate clash, Sangakkara recognized the need for rejuvenation in Sri Lankan cricket, not only for the team's future but also for his personal growth as a batsman. Consequently, he made the decision to step down from the captaincy.

In recognition of his outstanding performance, Sangakkara was honored as the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year in the same year. Throughout his captaincy tenure, he led the team in 81 international matches, securing victories in 44 matches while witnessing 11 matches end without a result.
