Merchant’s Career
Merchant was born on November 24, 1974, in Bristol, England. He started his career performing stand-up comedy at Bristol's Comedy Box. On 1997, Merchant appeared in an episode of the TV game show Blockbuster as a contestant. He worked for a short time as a DJ for Radio Caroline. When Merchant met Ricky Gervais, Gervais hired Merchant as his assistant at the London radio station, XFM London. Merchant and Gervais hosted a Saturday afternoon radio show together. Merchant worked for 7 years. His show never had a large volume of audience. Later XFM was bought by the Capital Radio Group as Merchant and Gervais left XFM. After abandoning XFM, Merchant began a production course at the BBC. He enlisted Gervais to perform in a 30-minute short film, "Seedy Boss," which became the earliest inspiration for their sitcom The Office, as part of his coursework. BBC Two aired the first series of The Office but the show initially received low ratings. Merchant and Gervais returned to XFM as co-hosts of The Ricky Gervais Show in the beginning of September 2001. This program led to their fruitful relationship with producer Karl Pilkington. In mid-2002, the second series of The Office was aired. In 2004, The Office aired in the U.S and he went to win the Golden Global Award for Best Television Series- Musical or Comedy. In December 2005, Merchant, Gervais, and Pilkington began recording a weekly podcast called The Ricky Gervais show. The podcast was consistently ranked the most popular in the world. It was also certified as the most-downloaded of all time by Guinness World Records. They recorded four more podcasts and began a series of audiobooks examining Pilkington's perspective on various subjects. In July 2005, Gervais and Merchant's new sitcom Extras premiered on BBC Two. By late 2006, series 2 of Extras aired followed by a Christmas special in December 2007. All of the three installments were broadcasted in the U.S. through HBO. Marchant won British Comedy Award for Best TV Actor for his performance as Lamb in 2006. Later, instead of comedy Marchant focused on music and particularly “new music” and began hosting his own radio show, The Steve Show, on BBC 6 Music. "The Steve Show" aired for four seasons and concluded in May 2009. On 29 September 2013, Merchant's sitcom Hello Ladies premiered on HBO.
