John Mayer was born on October 16, 1977, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His father’s name is Richard who was a high-school principal and his mother’s name is Margaret Mayer who was a middle-school English teacher. He grew up in nearby Fairfield and was the middle child between older brother Carl and younger brother Ben.  He was a middle school student who became close friends with future tennis star James Blake, and they often played Nintendo together after school. He went to the Center for Global Studies at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk for his junior year.

John Mayer became fascinated with the instrument after watching Michael J. Fox’s guitar performance. Then when he reached the age of 13, his father rented one guitar for him. He started taking lessons from a local guitar-shop owner and soon became consumed. After two years of practice, he began playing at bars and other venues and also in high school.
