The Career of Kyle Shanahan

After finishing college in Texas in 2003, Shanahan started working as a helper to coach Karl Dorrell at UCLA. Later, he got a job as an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004. Then, he moved to the Houston Texans in 2006, where he first coached wide receivers and then became the quarterback coach. He turned down a job offer from the University of Minnesota to stay in the NFL. In 2008, he became the youngest coordinator in the NFL with the Texans. In 2010, Shanahan joined the Washington Redskins with his father, Mike Shanahan, as their coach. He faced criticism during his time there. After leaving the Redskins, he became the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 2014 but left after a year due to disagreements with the head coach and management.

In 2015, Shanahan was hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their offensive coordinator. Under his leadership, the Falcons had a successful season in 2016, reaching the Super Bowl. However, they lost in overtime after blowing a big lead. The next year, Shanahan became the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Despite a rocky start, he led the team to success in the following seasons, even making it to the Super Bowl in 2019, though they lost.

Shanahan received a contract extension in 2020 but faced fines for not following COVID-19 protocols. The 49ers had a mixed season in 2020 and 2021 but made the playoffs in the latter year. In 2022, Shanahan guided the team to another strong season, earning a contract extension through 2027.
