Molina began boxing when he was eighteen and did really well with a 6–1 record before becoming a professional just two years later. In December 2005, Molina had a fight with Julio César Chávez, Jr. that ended in a draw, and many people thought Molina should have won. In February 2006, they had a rematch, and Molina lost by a decision after six rounds in Las Vegas. After losing to Mike Alvarado in another decision, Molina bounced back with nine straight wins. One of his victories was against Danny Perez for the WBO NABO light middleweight title. But then, he couldn't fight for a year and a half because of a disagreement with his promoter, Don King.

On March 25, 2011, Molina had a match with Olympic gold medalist Erislandy Lara that ended in a draw, and many people thought Molina should have won again. The judges scored it 97-93 for Molina and 95-95 on the other two scorecards. Molina later won a match by technical knockout against Allen Conyers.

In his next fight, Molina surprised everyone by beating former world champion Kermit Cintron on Showtime. Then, on September 14, 2013, as part of the Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez event, Molina won the IBF Junior Middleweight title by defeating Ishe Smith in a split decision.
