From 2009 to 2011 Pence also served as the chairman of the House Republican Conference. In January 2013 becoming Governor of Indiana, Pence initiated the largest tax cut in Indiana's history. Pence’s Early Life and Career
Born on June 7, 1959, in Columbus, Indiana to Nancy Jane and Edward J. Pence was among one of six children. Pence was named after his grandfather, Richard Michael Cawley. His father served in the U.S. Army and ran a group of gas stations. Pence attended his schooling from Columbus North High School. Pence graduated from Columbus North High School in 1977. He achieved his Bachelor’s degree in History from the Hanover College in the year 1981. Later he finished his JD degree in the year 1986 from the Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis in 1986.
After graduating, Pence began his career as an attorney in private practice. He ran unsuccessfully for a congressional seat in 1988 and 1990. He was able to become the president of the Indiana Policy Review Foundation in 1991. After two years serving as the president of the Indiana Policy Review Foundation, Pence resigned and hosted his very own radio talk show on WRCR-FM. The show was titled as “The Mike Pence Show”, which was aired on weekdays on 18 stations throughout the state. He also hosted a weekend political talk show out of Indianapolis. By late 1990s Pence ended his broadcast career and ran for Congress against Democratic incumbent Phil Sharp, but lost. After winning the seat in Indiana's 2nd congressional district Pence was elected as U.S. House of Representatives in Indiana's 2nd Congressional District. Pence was re-elected four more times by comfortable margins. Pence was chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of conservative House Republicans from 2005 to 2007. Mike Pence announced that he would be seeking the Republican nomination for governor of Indiana in 2012. Pence won the gubernatorial election. He defeated Democratic nominee John R. Gregg and Libertarian nominee Rupert Boneham. Pence was sworn in as the 50th governor of Indiana. Pence, as the governor, gained much popularity for his tax reforms. Pence signed a law to block local governments in Indiana from requiring businesses to offer higher and he was successful in cutting state taxes, and also reduced the burden of income tax and eliminated the inheritance tax. As governor, Pence pressed for a balanced budget amendment to the state's constitution. His fiscal reforms have helped Indiana maintain its AAA credit rating. Mike Pence announced that he would be seeking the Republican nomination for governor of Indiana in 2012. Pence was elected as Vice President after he dropped out of his gubernatorial re-election campaign in July to become the vice presidential running mate for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
