Tom Brokaw was born on February 6, 1940, in Webster, South Dakota who is the son of Eugenia “Jean” who worked in sales and as a post office clerk and Anthony Orville Brokaw. He was the eldest son among their three sons and he was named after his maternal great-grandfather Thomas Conley. His mother was Irish American and his father was a descendant of Huguenot immigrants Bourgon and Catherine Broussard. The town of Bristol, South Dakota and the Brokaw House, a small hotel and the first structure of Bristol which was found by his paternal great-grandfather, Richard P. Brokaw. His father was a construction foreman for the Army Corps Engineer and worked at the Black Hills Ordnance Depot and helped to construct Fort Randall Dam. Tom Brokaw just stayed for a short period of time in Bristol, Igloo, and Pickstow before studying in the high school in Yankton.

Studying at Yankton Senior High School and also being a high school student, Tom Brokaw was governor of South Dakota American Legion Boys State.
