During his time at Michigan from 1994 to 1997, he ran for 1876 yards and caught passes for 429 yards. He had nine games where he ran for over 100 yards, four of which were in the championship season of 1997. His best rushing game in college was against Minnesota in 1996 where he ran for 127 yards, but he also had a remarkable game against UCLA where he scored 4 touchdowns.

In 1996, he played in ten games and ran for 725 yards with ten touchdowns, although he was second in rushing yards on the team to Clarence Williams. In 1997, he played a crucial role in helping Michigan win the national championship, being the top rusher in the Rose Bowl. Despite not having any players with 1000 yards rushing or 500 yards receiving, the team relied on strong defense, led by Charles Woodson, who won the Heisman Trophy. Howard himself had 938 yards rushing and 276 yards receiving, scoring 7 rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving touchdown.

One of the memorable games of the 1997 season was against Penn State, where Howard rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown. Coach Lloyd Carr praised Howard's performance, calling him underrated. Michigan dominated the game, winning 34-0. The season ended with a win in the Rose Bowl, where Howard was the leading rusher with 70 yards.

He also played in the Hula Bowl in 1998 and was named North MVP, contributing to a comeback with 116 rushing yards and a key play resulting in a touchdown pass. In his professional career, he was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 1998 but struggled with fumbles during the pre-season and was released. He then joined the Jacksonville Jaguars but had limited success, ultimately ending his NFL career in 2000 after battling with fumbles again.
