Tommy's professional tennis career officially began in the year 1998 when he won the Junior Orange Bowl in both single and doubles. In the year 1999, Tommy also won both the single and double in the Futures-level event. In the year 2000, he reached the finals at Roland Garros in both singles and doubles but lost in the singles. However, he won the doubles with Feliciano Lopez. Tommy also won the doubles title at the Australian Open. The next year, Tommy also won two Challenger tournaments in Portugal.
