Windham started his professional wrestling career on November 27, 1979, in San Angelo Texas at the age of 19 against J.J Dillon. He was actually trained by his father Blackjack Mulligan. Soon after he became fans favorite and had great success in singles and tag action.

World Wrestling Federation signed Windham and Rotunda in October 1984. They started their career in WWF on November 17, 1984, and ended in 1985. After WWF, Rotunda and Windham wrestled at WrestleRock 86 where they were able to defeat The Fabulous Ones.

In 1986, he shifted to NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions and had many memorable matches with Ric Flair. He then formed a successful pairing with Ron Garvin and won the U.S tag team championship but later lost them in 1987.

In 1988, he teamed up with Lex Luger to form "The Twin Towers" to win the NWA World Tag Team Championship from Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson. But Windham betrayed Luger causing them to lose the title. His contract in Four Horsemen expired in March 1989.

He then returned to the WWF in June 1989 as the WIdowmaker and later in 1990, he rejoined Four Horsemen and face turn. For the second time, he returned to the WWF in 1996 as "The Stalker" wearing camouflage face paint.

On October 28, 2011, Barry suffered from heart attract and was taken into intensive care in Florida. However, he recovered from such tragic and appeared at the 2012 WWE Hall of Dame with J.J Dillon, Rich Flair, Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson as The Four Horsemen.
