Cerrone was born in Columbus, Ohio, of Italian heritage. He often gets into fights as he was growing up. He began professional bull riding when Cerrone attended Air Academy School. He was introduced to kickboxing and taekwondo by a friend. He compiled an undefeated amateur record of 13-0. Cerrone initiated training in Colorado at a gym, called Freedom Fighters. He was featured on the Versus TV series, where his fight with Anthony Njokuani was sponsored. Cerrone won the fight in the first round. Later, Cerrone was signed to fight in the Extreme Cagefighting. His first fight was with Kenneth Alexander, where he won via submission in 0:56 seconds of the first round. In 2009, he competed with WEC Lightweight Champion, Jamie Varner. Varner couldn’t continue his fight when Cerrone hit Varner's temple with an illegal knee while Varner was still on the ground. Cerrone wins the Fight of the Night award. Cerrone defeated Krause via first round submission in the scheduled match on June 7, 2009. Cerrone fights a rematch with Benson Henderson in 2010, Cerrone lost via first-round guillotine choke submission. All fighters of WEC were transferred to UFC when WEC merged with UFC in October 2010. On 2011, Cerrone defeated Paul Kelly via tap-out due to a rare naked choke. For their performance, both fighters earned Fight of the Night credit. He knocked out Charles Oliveira via TKO three minutes into the opening round and earned Knockout of Night honors for the performance.
