Before joining The Bachelor, Becca Kufrin was employed at Skyya Communications, a technology public relations agency located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kufrin participated in Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s season of The Bachelor, reaching the final three. During the season in Peru, her ex-boyfriend Ross Jirgl unexpectedly appeared and proposed, but Kufrin declined the offer. Initially chosen as the winner by Luyendyk, Kufrin accepted his proposal at the season's end. However, Luyendyk later broke off the engagement for the runner-up, Lauren Burnham, before the season concluded.

The breakup was recorded and aired with raw, unedited footage during the two-night finale, a first for The Bachelor. Following the on-air split, Minnesota State Representative Drew Christensen's fans raised over $6,000 for Kufrin through Venmo. Kufrin, in turn, donated the funds to Stand Up to Cancer, with ABC and Katie Couric matching her contribution. Bachelor Season 20 lead Ben Higgins also pledged to donate profits from his coffee company for a 24-hour period.

After the breakup, 12 billboards expressing support for Kufrin and disapproval of Luyendyk's actions were erected in Minneapolis, along with 4 in Los Angeles and 1 in Times Square. During the March 10, 2018 episode of Saturday Night Live, Cecily Strong portrayed Kufrin in a cold-open parodying the breakup.

Kufrin was revealed as the Bachelorette on March 6, 2018, during ABC's After the Final Rose special, and the season premiered on May 28, 2018.
