From 1993 to 1999, Harrison worked as a sports reporter at CBS affiliate KWTV in Oklahoma City. He also had brief stints at TVG Network, a horse racing channel, and hosted the Designers' Challenge on HGTV. In 2001, Harrison took on the hosting role for the short-lived game show Mall Masters on GSN.

In the year 2002, Harrison made a guest appearance on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, playing the role of a music show host in the episode "Ping, Ping a Song."

On November 23, 2008, Harrison had the opportunity to host the pre-show for the American Music Awards, which was broadcast live on ABC. His co-hosts for the event were Carrie Ann Inaba, a judge on Dancing with the Stars, and Nicole Scherzinger, a member of the Pussycat Dolls.

In the year 2011, he teamed up with Brooke Burns to co-host the game show You Deserve It. He continued his hosting duties on Designers' Challenge on HGTV and Mall Masters on the Game Show Network.

In April 2015, Disney-ABC revealed that Harrison would be taking over as the host of the syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for the 2015-2016 season, replacing Terry Crews. This marked a return for Harrison to GSN, as the network began airing reruns of the show on December 18, 2017, following the cancellation of Mall Masters. He received two nominations for Outstanding Game Show Host in 2018 and 2019 for his work on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? although he did not win, with the honors going to Wayne Brady and Alex Trebek, respectively. On May 19, 2015, Harrison delved into the world of literature and published his debut romance novel, The Perfect Letter.

On February 13, 2021, he made an announcement that he would temporarily step aside from the franchise due to criticism for defending a contestant on The Bachelor who was accused of racism. Alternative hosts were subsequently announced for the seventeenth season of The Bachelorette in March 2021. In June 2021, it was revealed that Harrison had permanently departed from the franchise after a tenure of 19 years.
