John began his football career with  Barnsley Youth Academy. In the year 2012, he made his debut for the senior side of Barnsley in the Championship against Reading which ended in a 4-0 defeat. He made a total of 28 appearances for the club and scored his only goal in a League Cup first-round match against Rochdale which ended in a 4-3 victory.
