The Career of Pat Cummins -

Pat Cummins quickly caught the attention of Australian selectors and made his debut in Test cricket at the tender age of 18. His remarkable entry into the international scene saw him shine on his debut, taking six wickets against a formidable South African side in Johannesburg in 2011. However, Cummins promising career was marred by a series of injuries, limiting his appearances to white-ball cricket before he could make a comeback and establish himself as the spearhead of Australia's Test bowling attack. Despite his exceptional talent, Cummins struggled with a fragile body, preventing him from playing a single Test match for the following six years. Despite his sensational Test debut, the New South Wales cricketer was unable to capitalize on his early success due to persistent injuries.

Prior to his Test debut, Cummins made his mark playing for NSW in the domestic circuit, making his debut in the 2010/11 season. However, it was his performance in the Big Bash League (BBL) that truly showcased his skills. Topping the bowling charts with 11 wickets at an average of 14.09 and an impressive economy rate of just over 6, Cummins was hailed as the future of Australian pace bowling. His immense potential earned him the distinction of becoming the youngest player to receive a central contract from Cricket Australia (CA). During the 2014/15 domestic season, Cummins dedicated himself to improving his fitness level and regained his old rhythm. As a result, he earned a spot in the 2015 World Cup squad, although he only played a couple of matches. Despite limited opportunities, he contributed to Australia's victory in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, taking five wickets along the way.

After a long six-year wait, Cummins finally made his much-anticipated Test comeback against India in 2017. It was a challenging test for the fast bowler, given the subcontinent's wickets that tend to favor spinners. However, Cummins showcased his resilience by playing back-to-back Test matches and proving his ability to thrive in tough conditions.

His biggest challenge came during the Ashes series against England at home, where Cummins emerged as a menacing force. He claimed 23 wickets and also displayed his batting skills with two scores of 40+. Cummins prowess extended beyond Test cricket, as he demonstrated his abilities in the shorter formats as well. In the away ODI series against India in 2019, he registered an impressive tally of 14 wickets in the five-match series, helping Australia secure a 3-2 victory. Cummins consistent performances led to his inclusion in Australia's 2019 World Cup squad, where he made a significant impact with the ball. With 14 wickets to his name, Cummins, alongside Mitchell Starc, spearheaded the Australian bowling attack.

During Australia's much-anticipated Ashes series against England in the summer of 2019, Cummins once again tormented the English batsmen, emerging as the leading wicket-taker in the bilateral event. His remarkable performance saw him claim 29 wickets in five matches, with an impressive average of 19.62. In recognition of his outstanding performances in 2019, Cummins was honored with the prestigious Allan Border Medal.

By the end of 2019, Cummins ascended to the top of the ICC Test bowler's ranking and retained his position until the end of 2020. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020, he emerged as one of the few shining lights for the Australian team, wreaking havoc with the ball and capturing 21 wickets in four matches. Despite his heroics, Australia ultimately lost the series 1-2. Cummins also played a pivotal role in Australia's triumph in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. Furthermore, in 2021, he was appointed as the Test captain following Steve Smith's resignation, and he also took the role of white-ball captain after Aaron Finch's retirement. Under Cummins captainship, Australia clinched the ICC World Test Championship 2023 title. Talking about his bowling stats as of July 2023, a detailed list is shown below-

Cummins made headlines in the IPL 2020 auction when he became the most expensive player, being purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a staggering INR 15.5 crore.
