Her parents Milton William Augustine William and Helen both worked as music educators, she was the eldest of the two children. Since her childhood, she was interested in singing, dancing, acting, and modeling and grew up studying jazz dance, violin, piano and French horn. She joins Horace Greenley High School and later attained a scholarship to enroll at the Syracuse University in 1981. She participates and won the Miss Syracuse title after which she gained the Miss New York crown in 1983. On September 17, 1983, six months after entering her first beauty pageant, she becomes the first contestant from the African-American community to win the title.
